Scotland mortality 2022 week 30
Summary of Scotland’s mortality and excess mortality. All data mortality and population data via National Records of Scotland
Overall
In 2022 Scotland is seeing the same rising trend of excess mortality as was seen in 2021, starting to rise around 12-14 weeks post vaccination.
In this most recent update
Prior week 29 revised up to +14% (142 more deaths than normal).
Week 30 initially +20% (192 more deaths than normal).
In this recent trend of excess we have 2,258 more deaths than should be expected.
Excess mortality by Location of death
Excess mortality continues to be people dying at home. As the cumulative chart shows, for the entire period since 2020, deaths in hospital are negative, and care homes very slightly positive - and 13,372 excess deaths at home
Excess mortality by cause
Again ‘Others’ is the primary cause of excess death, yet still we have COVID excess (see below). Incredibly we have 1500 excess COVID deaths up until the point of vaccine rollout complete, and more than 2,000 since then?!
‘COVID'-19’ deaths during summer?
This chart shows COVID-19 deaths cumulatively each summer. 202o was our best, and 2022 is our WORST. We are currently 40% worse than 2020, and 55% worse than 2021.
Cumulative excess mortality by age
In this chart rising = ongoing excess, falling = below normal.
All older age groups continue to show strongly increasing excess mortality, with only age 15-44 having settled and trending down.
Percentage excess mortality by age
This chart shows the percentage excess, overall and by Age Group - it gives a more proportionate summary of where excess is occurring. Both of the two eldest age groups showing almost 20% excess mortality. (Spikes also in the two youngest age groups).
2022 overall excess by cause and location
Overall we have older people dying, at home, and the cause is ‘Others’, Respiratory and Circulatory.
Infant mortality (<1 years)
Recently again a bit volatile with some high spikes, but keeping around normal level.
Child mortality (1 to 14 years)
Also some high spikes here, but has been more or less normal. Look for this to settle down again.
We will keep publishing these analyses week by week.
Best wishes!
